We are delighted that St Mary’s Wivenhoe is hosting the Annual Ringing Competition for the North East District of the Essex Association of Change Ringers.
The church bells will be ringing intermittently from 1.30 pm until approximately 5.00pm. We are anticipating six teams, at least, participating in this event.
We hope our neighbours will find some enjoyment in the event and thank you for your forbearance.
A Memorial Service in gratitude for the life and service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be held at St Mary’s church on Sunday 18 September 2022 at 10.30am.
The Rt Revd Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, the Bishop of Chelmsford has expressed her great sadness at the news of the Queen’s passing. Bishop Guli said:
“My thoughts and prayers, and those of everyone in the Diocese of Chelmsford, are with the Royal Family, our nation and commonwealth.
“At this time of great sadness, we remember with profound gratitude Her Majesty the Queen’s contribution as monarch. Her reign included times of great joy and celebration but also many challenges. It has been a time of unprecedented change for this nation and the world but throughout, Her Majesty’s faith in God and extraordinary sense of duty helped to guide her.
“As we mourn Her Majesty’s death, we give thanks to God for her life, her faith and her exceptional devotion to her duty as monarch.”
An electronic book of condolence has been opened on the Church of England website and it can be accessed via this link.
St Mary’s church will be open to say a prayer, to light a candle, to sign the book of condolence, on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th September from 1.00-5.00pm.
You may know Kerry Rooke from church, or her children from Sunday Club.
Kerry is undertaking the London Marathon in aid of St Mary’s Church in Wivenhoe.
She has been training hard in the hope of completing it in a good time and raising funds for St Mary’s Fabric Fund. There are various projects that are awaiting funding – the steps from the new annexe patio onto the south lawn being just one. She is hoping not only for sponsorship but also some good wishes to speed her on her way.
If you wish to sponsor her effort and/or give her your good wishes you can do so via this link.
We are looking forward to more Questions from people. Post them confidentially to stmaryswivenhoe@gmail.com and they will be included in the next answer panel discussions.
We’re continuing the on-line publication of Sunday sermons. If you’re interested in short, thought-provoking homilies from clergy from around the Chelmsford Diocese then we have just the thing for your here.
As it has done not infrequently in the last couple of years, the virus yet again put the mockers on plans as soon as they were annnounced!
Our Service sheet for this morning’s service, which was published on Thursday, named Dr Sara Batts-Neale as the president and preacher. Alas, Sara ran foul of Covid and last minute replacements meant we had a thought-provoking sermon by Revd Janet Driver instead, with reference to this painting by Vermeer:
Unfortunately we cannot bring you the audio as well, but perhaps take a look at this Youtube reflection on today’s Gospel by Bishop Roger, which touched on some of the same ideas.
