New Year’s Resolutions

Making New Year’s resolutions is like starting in a brand new school notebook when you were at school: you weren’t going to mess it up and this time it wasn’t going to have any of those could-do-betters or must-try-harders in it that made the last one only fit for hiding away. That first, snowily pristine page held the promise of future perfection.
Yeah… we’ve all been there.

So with maturer expectations and a greater sense of humility, I looked at the Rule of St Benedict and there, in the prologue, is the sine qua non of any resolutions:

And first of all,
whatever good work you begin to do,
beg of Him with most earnest prayer to perfect it,
