On Sunday 1 October at 10.30am we will have our Harvest Thanksgiving service at which all are welcome to bring their gifts.
We will distribute them the following day among Wivenhoe residents in need, Beacon House, Night Shelter for the homeless in Colchester, and Wivenhoe Foodbank.
The following items are very welcome: non-perishable food items such as soup, vegetables or sauces in tins, pasta, rice, coffees and teas, jam and marmalade, and also soap, shower gel, and shampoo.
Would you be willing to volunteer to help sorting and delivering these items on Monday 2 October: sorting from 9.30am – delivering from 10.30am?
Then just come along to St Mary’s and join us. Many thanks.
Tickets are still available (but not many!) for the Harvest Lunch that will be held on Saturday 30 September 2023 at 12.30pm.
They can be secured by contacting Heather on fundraisingwivstmarys@gmail.com and cost £10 per adult.
There’s a welcome sherry, and there’s glazed ham on the menu amongst other things- and puddings. That’s as much as this writer was able to find out! But whenever it has been held it’s always been delicious 🙂
Family tickets and vegetarian options are available.
It must be 10 years ago when we had our last Pet Blessing service; we all sat in the churchyard, on straw bales left from the Church Ale the day before. We had a small brass orchestra, and when it struck up all the dogs did as well…!
So another Pet Blessing service is well overdue, and this time it will be held inside the church.
For those who subscribe to The View (weekly on-line Diocesan News magazine) this post will be old hat, but it would be good to make as many people as possible aware of the momentous event that took place on Sunday 10 September, When Emma Smith was ordained a Deacon.
Below are a couple of items ‘borrowed’ from various Diocesan publications, one of them showing the moment of Emma’s ordination.
St Mary’s church will be open on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September from 1-4pm as part of the Heritage celebrations taking place in the week that includes this weekend.
Celebrating our local history and culture, this is an opportunity to find out about hidden places and little known facts about well-known buildings.
There will be people on hand to tell visitors the secrets of St Mary’s church (as recently revealed to The Way youth club). And of course, being a church, no celebrations are allowed to pass without cake!
Saturday 2 September, 1-4 pm in St Mary’s church grounds. SCRUFTS dog event and stalls, plus BBQ. Certificates for walks, and rosettes for competition winners of Waggiest Dog and Dog most like Owner (or vice versa).
Tomorrow, 1st August, is the official date of Lammas day, a wheat harvest festival that is also known as Loaf Mass Day. The holiday encourages celebrations and mass gatherings where individuals thank God for the first harvest of the season.
We celebrated in some style in the Rectory garden on Saturday 29 July with a Blessing of the Lammas Loaf as in the video below, and where about 50 people were treated to Nick’s famous chicken curry and/or various BBQ delights with great salads and a fantastic selection of puddings for afters.
Congratulations to the catering team and the organisers who entertained us with a quiz, a raffle and children’s activities as well as feeding us all.
There’s someone missing from this photo: Suzanne was too busy running around to catch her!
