St. Mary’s Singers is an adult choral group which meets for three 8 week terms each year to learn and perform major choral works under the direction of Graham Wadley.
Our annual performances are traditionally on Good Friday, early July (Summer Canticles) and Remembrance Sunday.
Members of the group also join with St Mary’s Church Choir for some major services including the Carol Service, and the Annual Wivenhoe Civic Service in October.
Past performances have included music by Parry, Pergolesi, Salieri, Handel, Haydn, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Requiems by Fauré and Cherubini, Mozart’s Vespers and Coronation Mass, Dubois, Vierne and Vivaldi.
We have also performed ‘Wondrous Cross’ by Colchester based composer Alan Bullard and more recently we have sung smaller pieces by Pergolesi, Saint-Saens, Stainer, Gibbons and modern composers John rutter, Bob Chilcott, Philip Ledger and Philip Stopford, covering many periods of music composition.
Membership currently numbers 20 singers mainly from Wivenhoe and the local area. John Rippin, Organist Emeritus of Chingford Parish Church, is our regular organist for the concerts.
Soloists for our performances are normally drawn from within the group.
We rehearse for the special occasions on Thursday evenings in St Mary’s and then always welcome new members for all voice parts to join us. There is a small voluntary subscription paid by the members which enables us to cover our costs.
