2019 Concert Programme

Friday 5th July 2019 – Quire (Colchester’s World Music Choir) at 7.30pm

Our first concert in 2019 will be on Friday 5th July at 7.30pm with the 28 members of the community choir QUIRE. Under the musical directorship of Prof. Bill Tamblyn, they will perform an evening of music under the title of ‘Back to your Roots.’

Back to your Roots – this title reflects the origins of Quire as a World music choir, set up over 12 years ago to sing music from cultures where, mostly, the singers will perform traditional music from memory and in many cases dance to the music as they sing.
So here in St Mary’s Wivenhoe we will have a programme with Sea Shanties (a living Cornish tradition as we see from the recent success of the movie Fishermen’s Friends) White American soul music, African worker songs from traditions of the RSA and Zimbabwe – where, again music is sung and danced, music from the ‘white’ American gospel tradition and modern pieces which reflect English jazz and soul as created by composer and arranger Bill Tamblyn.
Bill is glad to be back at St Mary’s. His son sang in a boys’ choir here many years ago and, through his church music contacts (which he established while teaching church music as professor at Colchester), he knows the distinguished choralist Graham Wadley, Director of Music at St. Mary’s Church in Wivenhoe.

Quire has moved on from the early days when Bill wondered if anyone might be interested in a music that did not require them to hold music scores. Quire now has 5 CDs to its credit.
Quire has held workshops in various parts of the UK and has broadcast on occasion on BBC Radio 4. We are looking forward to 2020 when we hope to visit Liverpool for workshops and who knows, even a broadcast or too!
Tickets are £8 (including a glass of wine or non-alcoholic drink). Tickets are available in advance from RSVP Gift Shop which is on the corner of High Street & Station Road, Wivenhoe. Or they can be reserved by calling: 07721 011114 or Email: info@quire.org
The Concert will start at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm)
