Visiting bellringers 16 July 2016

We’re notifying the community of a forthcoming ringing event.
The Suffolk Guild of Ringers has been given permission to ring the bells of St Mary’s on Saturday 16 July, from 3-3.30 pm. The reason for the occasion has been given below in their own words.

Simon Griffiths was an excellent Suffolk ringer and conductor, well-liked by all who came in contact with him..  One of his other passions was cycling, and he frequently organised bell-ringing tours in the summer months, based on perhaps 4 or 5 towers within cycling distance of each other.  So the morning was spent at a couple of churches, then usually followed by a relaxing pub lunch somewhere, before a bit more ringing in the afternoon.  Simon’s death two years ago was very sudden and unexpected, and as part of our tribute to his memory we have continued to organise these cycle tours.
On 16th July a group of his erstwhile ringing friends will be on their bikes in NE Essex.  The day will start with ringing at St Osyth, followed by Thorrington.  Then, after a timely lunch break at some hostelry in Wivenhoe we shall ring there from 3pm till 3.30 pm, finally rounding off the ringing part of the day by visiting St Leonard’s, Colchester.  The evening usually concludes with a good curry!
